The Humberside Police have handed over a file with over 13,000 exhibits to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) after an extensive 10-month investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. The case follows a concern for care of deceased report on 6 March 2024, and officers removed 35 bodies and a quantity of ashes from the premises.
Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin confirmed that the families involved are aware of the development and thanked them for their patience. The two people arrested last year in connection with the investigation remain on bail.
The CPS will now review the evidence supplied to the file by the police investigation to determine whether charges will be pressed. Humberside Police rigorously conducted their investigation and treated all lines of enquiry delicately and respectfully, dealing with the grieving families with sensitivity and compassion.
Julie Butcher, senior operations manager at Victim Support, confirmed support is still in progress for those affected by the case.
