Conwy burst pipe: Thousands facing weekend with no water

Following a burst pipe in Dolgarrog, Conwy County, thousands of households are estimated to be without water over the weekend. The incident occurred on Wednesday and is thought to have affected as many as 40,000 households, resulting in school closures and business shutdowns. Some homes are now beginning to see water return, but the company has warned that full water supplies will not be restored for “up to 48 hours”.

Welsh Water has confirmed that the burst pipe has been repaired, but chief executive Peter Perry has called the problem a “catastrophic failure” caused by ground movement that could not have been foreseen or prevented. Some areas are now beginning to see a return to normal water supplies, including Conwy, Dolgarrog, Trefriw, Llanrwst, and Eglwysbach, but Welsh Water is completing a controlled restoration of the supply to avoid any further disruption.

Certain customers affected by the outage may be eligible for compensation, with eligible households to be paid £30 for every 12 hours without water. Business customers will be paid £75 for every 12 hours without water, and are able to make additional claims for lost earnings online. Four bottled water stations have been put in place in Colwyn, Zip World Conwy, Llandudno West Shore car park and Bodlondeb.

Welsh Water has also warned that supply will come back on at different times for different households, and that “discoloured water” is a normal occurrence after a supply interruption. Although thousands of homes have had their water supplies restored as of Saturday morning, it is still unclear how long it will take for all affected households to have their supplies restored
