Jimmy Mizen: Mum fears son's killer became 'more aggressive' in prison

Jake Fahri, the killer of schoolboy Jimmy Mizen, has been recalled to prison after probation officials claimed he had “shamelessly boasted” about his crime. Fahri was convicted of murder in 2008 after throwing a glass dish that shattered and severed an artery in Mizen’s neck. He was sentenced to life but released on license in June 2023. Mizen’s mother, Margaret, expressed concern that Fahri had become “more aggressive, more arrogant” since being imprisoned, after reports in The Sun suggested that he had recorded music referencing the murder under the name TEN.

TEN is a drill rap artist known for hiding his identity by wearing a balaclava in videos. His music frequently features violent themes, which Margaret Mizen believes incites violence and encourages young people to carry and use knives. Previous reports highlighted that two of TEN’s songs had been played on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Introducing show, although not any with an apparent reference to murder.

Mizen has been vocal in her disappointment that the BBC played TEN’s music, calling it “awful” and stating that “action should be taken on music” that glamorises violence. She called on authorities to ban such music, although she admitted that might be too much to expect. Earlier interviews have seen Mizen question the effectiveness of the whole prison system, suggesting that responsibility for rehabilitation should be shifted from the Prison Service to wider society.

A spokesperson for the HM Prison and Probation Service highlighted that Fahri had been recalled to prison because “all offenders released on licence are subject to strict conditions…we will recall them to prison if they break the rules”. Fahri’s recall has understandably taken the Mizen family back to the time of Jimmy’s murder. Mizen says the family accepts that the pain will never disappear and that it is possible that Fahri may never feel remorse for his crime
