The UK has sufficient gas reserves to meet its winter requirements, according to a statement by the government, following Centrica’s recent warning about the country’s “concerningly low” residual energy supplies. Centrica, which owns the nation’s largest gas storage facility, declared that the UK currently has less than seven days-worth of gas inventory as a result of the atypical cold weather. However, the government revealed it was closely monitoring the situation and had “all tools” at its disposal to address any shortfall in the supply.
Gas storage facilities in the UK presently contain only half their capacity, as per Centrica. The UK is currently grappling with freezing conditions, but the UK Meteorological Office confirmed that Friday would mark “the start of a change to our weather” with milder temperatures predicted to arrive next week. The cold snap and the termination last month of pipeline supplies following the Russia-Ukraine crisis have meant that gas inventory levels have been put under considerable pressure.
The UK’s capacity to store gas is relatively low. Nearly half of its capacity comes from Centrica’s Rough facility off the coast of East Yorkshire. Although closed in 2017, the facility was reopened in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine sparked an energy crisis. There are also liquid natural gas facilities at three terminals and several smaller facilities distributed throughout the country.
If additional gas is required, then traders will have access to EU supplies, providing the right prices are agreed. Were there to be a shortage of gas in the UK, there is a chance that wholesale prices might go up, although they are at present lower than they were earlier this year. Centrica is hoping to spend £2bn renovating the Rough facility so that hydrogen can be stored in it, given the country’s aim of reducing reliance on natural gas as part of green policies. The company has been pressing the government to confirm that hydrogen will indeed be a part of the country’s future energy mix as a justifying factor for this investment
