Two more lynx spotted on loose in the Highlands

After a pair of lynx were captured in Kingussie in the Cairngorms National Park on Thursday, two more of the wild cats have been spotted in the same location on Friday. The authorities are cautioning members of the public not to attempt to approach the animals and are collaborating with experts who are trained to capture them securely. The police have appealed to visitors to avoid the area where the lynx have been seen, particularly given the inhospitable winter weather conditions that are currently prevailing in the region.

Larger than the first two captured animals, these lynx were seen early in the morning, and experts from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Cairngorms National Park rangers and the police are carrying out investigations to capture them. A drone operated by Cairngorms Mountain Rescue Team is aiding in the search. Additional traps are being laid in an endeavor to catch the two lynx and capture them safely and humanely before taking them to Edinburgh Zoo to be kept in quarantine, along with the others already captured.

A Mammal Society campaign is advocating for the reintroduction of wild lynx breeds to Scotland, arguing that this move can redress ecosystem imbalance while rehabilitating landscapes depleted of biodiversity. They suggest that rogue rewilders may be responsible for illegally releasing the lynx, but the Society emphasized that such actions are irresponsible, calling for stable and healthy populations of lynx to be “thriving in the UK.” Lynx species prey on hares, rabbits, roe deer, and young red deer in the wild.

The Highland Council has stated that it has no premises that are operating under a Dangerous Wild Animal license, which is required by law to keep lynx. The RZSS has emphasized that the two captured lynx were released illegally, describing the practice as being highly irresponsible
