From Gladiators to James Bond, Marvel and running a strip club

Daz Crawford’s life has taken him on an incredible journey. From a rough childhood in Liverpool, he joined the military as a young teenager, then joined a male strip troupe before winning a role as Diesel in Gladiators. He went on to appear in The World is Not Enough, Blade 2, and dozens of other TV shows and movies. Today, he is the owner of a lap-dancing club in Norwich named Sugar and Spice.

Crawford initially didn’t enjoy the show Gladiators, believing it to be fake and steroid-fueled. Still, he auditioned and was cast as Diesel. Following the show’s conclusion, Crawford continued to make a name for himself in Hollywood as an actor. Although he has worked on many high-profile projects, he emphasises that he is a “jobbing actor” who simply enjoys finding work.

He has now appeared in over 50 productions and his latest movie, The Carpenter, is a faith-based film following a Viking orphan’s journey as Jesus’ apprentice. However, amid all of his Hollywood success, Crawford hasn’t forgotten his roots, continuing to run Sugar and Spice. He believes that despite the negative reputation of lap-dancing clubs, Sugar and Spice is “light entertainment” that’s welcoming to all.

Crawford reflects fondly on his time with Gladiators, which gave him his big break. Despite being past its prime when he joined, Gladiators was still immensely popular and Crawford used his newfound celebrity status to go around the country advocating for disadvantaged children. He is thrilled that Gladiators is finally back on TV: “You stick 14 or 15 people in tight Lycra and you create some superheroes; you’ve got entertainment for the whole family.
