A fairground ride at Centenary Square in Birmingham city centre experienced a “failure and crash” that resulted in two women being hospitalized, according to West Midlands Police. Emergency services, including officers and paramedics, responded to reports of an issue with the ride, called the City Flyer ride and operated by Danter Attractions, at around 7:29 PM GMT on Thursday. The West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that the ride “dropped to ground level whilst in operation.” At least two gondolas on the 55m tall ride’s wires were seen entangled in photographs provided by the BBC.
West Midlands Ambulance Service transported the two injured women to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, though their injuries are not believed to be serious. An eye-witness informed reporters that “girls who appeared to be injured” were seen departing the area, with “one girl who seemed to have her face cut.” The City Flyer is hailed as one of the tallest rides worldwide, providing panoramic views of its surroundings.
Amelie Huet, 18, was situated with a group of friends in the ice skate bar when the disaster occurred. According to Huet, when she heard sirens, she went out to the balcony and saw ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks. “Someone told us the structure dropped and someone fell out,” she remarked. The investigation into how the failure occurred is ongoing, and neither the fair operators nor the ride manufacturers have released any public statements on the matter
