King Charles to begin Australia tour with church service

On the first day of their Australian tour, King Charles and Queen Camilla will be attending a church service in Sydney. This is the first time the King has visited Australia since becoming the country’s head of state in September 2022, and it is also the biggest trip he has taken since starting cancer treatment in February. During their six-day visit, the royal couple will meet with political and community leaders and celebrate the nation’s people, culture, and heritage. The service will take place at St Thomas’ Anglican Church and will be conducted by the Most Reverend Kanishka Raffel, the city’s archbishop.

The New South Wales government has informed the public where they can see the royal couple after the service, and it is expected that the couple will meet with well-wishers. On Saturday, the couple’s rest day, an image of the King and Queen Camilla arriving at Admiralty House, the official residence of Australia’s governor-general, was released. The couple was touched by the Sydney Opera House being lit up with a rolling projection of images of them. As part of the King’s trip, he was appointed honorary ranks in the three services of the Australian Defence Force.

The King’s visit will also involve supporting environmental projects and a naval review in Sydney Harbour. He is expected to meet two Australian scientists who have carried out pioneering research on melanoma, one of the country’s most common cancers. There will be a reception in the capital on Monday to welcome King Charles; however, the six state premiers have said they are unable to attend. The King’s cancer treatment has been suspended while in Australia and during his next trip to Samoa, where he will attend a Commonwealth leaders’ summit.

The Royal Family’s official social media account posted that the trip would include the King addressing the Australian parliament in Canberra. The tour schedules do not include evening engagements, state dinners, or trips out late in the day. In a message, the Royal Family expressed their excitement for their first visit to Australia and their eagerness to celebrate the nation’s rich cultures and communities. Additionally, the Association of Commonwealth Universities has announced the launch of the King’s Commonwealth Fellowship programme, developed in response to the urgent economic, social, and environmental challenges affecting small island developing states
