New investigation ordered into 'doorstep murder' of Alistair Wilson

Scotland’s Lord Advocate, Dorothy Bain KC, has ordered a full, fresh investigation into the murder of Alistair Wilson at his home in Nairn almost 20 years ago. The case, widely referred to as the “doorstep murder,” has remained unsolved since Mr. Wilson’s shooting in 2004. Under Bain’s direction, investigators from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and police officers from Scotland will pursue the case as a cold investigation.

The incident in question took place on November 28th, 2004. Mr. Wilson was shot and later died in a hospital, leaving behind his wife Veronica and two young sons. The killer, an unidentified stocky man aged between 20 and 40, arrived at the front door and asked for Mr. Wilson by name before shooting him with a handgun. The weapon used was found by workers clearing a drain a few weeks later and was traced back by forensic analysis to the crime.

While significant efforts have been made to solve the murder over the years, no suspect has ever been charged and the case has remained unsolved. The police investigation will now fall under the jurisdiction of a detective chief superintendent, and ACC Steve Johnson of the Scottish Police Force vowed to their commitment to bringing the killer to justice.

Though it has been suggested that the motive may have come from within the local community, no concrete lines of investigation have been publicly confirmed. Nevertheless, Mr. Wilson’s family have always made an appeal for anyone with information on the crime to come forward. The re-examination of the case aims to generate new leads and, after almost twenty years, to bring closure to Mr. Wilson’s loved ones and to the community as a whole
