Taylor Swift cancels Vienna ‘Eras’ shows following planned terror plot

Following the arrest of two suspects who allegedly planned a terror attack, Taylor Swift’s concerts in Vienna have been cancelled. The three gigs were scheduled to occur on August 8th, 9th, and 10th at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna, Austria as part of the popstar’s ongoing ‘Eras’ tour. This came hours after police announced that they had narrowly foiled an ISIS plot to attack one of Swift’s shows in the country. The cancellation was intended to ensure everyone’s safety.

“With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety. All tickets will be refunded within the next 10 business days,” Barracuda Music, the show’s promoter, said in a statement.

As reported by Kronen Zeitung (via New York Post), two suspects involved in the plot were arrested today (August 7). Authorities searched their house and discovered various chemicals and substances that could be used to make explosives. The suspects are believed to have become radicalized online.

Austrian Director General for Public Safety Franz Ruf said in a press conference: “The suspects were focused on the Taylor Swift concerts. We discovered that he was taking action to prepare for the attack. A clear threat has been averted.” Prior to the cancellation of the gigs, Ruf mentioned that security at the concerts would be increased.

The concerts were expected to bring in roughly 65,000 concertgoers per day, along with an additional 10,000 to 15,000 fans outside of the stadium. NME has reached out to Swift’s representatives for a comment
