‘Life Eater’ review: twisted kidnapping simulator strikes at the heart

Horror simulator game, Life Eater, created by Strange Scaffold, can easily get its players in some serious legal trouble. Players of this game take on the role of a modern-day druid, whose objective is to stalk and ultimately sacrifice victims in order to prevent the world’s destruction by an unknown god.

To achieve this, players must thoroughly research their victims, noting down their schedules, commutes, and even their bathroom habits. The game’s interface is video editing style, where players piece together a week-long profile of their victim’s every move, using creepy activities to reveal hidden schedules. The game becomes a balance of staying under the radar and keeping the victim’s schedule monitored to ensure that enough information has been gathered on the victim before abduction.

Every action taken by the player depletes a timer and contributes to a suspicion meter. The game is therefore a thrilling balance between quick suspicious actions and taking the time to complete complex but less suspicious tasks. To add to the difficulty, each target victim must match a specific description, which necessitates working out the puzzle of who fits the bill while the deadline looms.

After apprehending the victim, the game’s last process is carrying out a ritualistic murder that combines all of the information collected during the research phase. The ending of the ritual will determine if all this research was enough, which inspires players to become meticulous about their note-taking.

Life Eater is a deeply immersive game with an unsettling story relayed through jagged cutscenes and fantastic performances by actor Jarrett Griffis and game developer Xalavier Nelson Jr. Its gameplay style is so believable that this tension can discomfort the player, as it is played through the perspective of the villain. Players who love horror games and speed-run challenges alike can look forward to playing Life Eater; the game is set to launch on April 16 for PC
