Gavin Robinson has been installed as the new interim leader of the DUP, following the resignation of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson on Friday. Sir Jeffrey has been charged with historical allegations of rape and sexual offences, which he has said he will contest. Meanwhile, MP Carla Lockhart has declared that there will be no dissenting voices in the party, supporting Robinson’s appointment as leader. Lockhart also noted that Robinson had the unanimous support of the party’s officers who set policy and announce major decisions.
Lockhart voiced her concern over Sir Jeffrey’s charges, which she described as coming as a “big shock”. The MP told reporters that it was for the MP of Lagan Valley to decide whether he would stand down. Lockhart expressed her support for Robinson, stating that there would be no challenges made against him. Robinson had been the party’s deputy leader since last June.
Lockhart also emphasised the importance of not putting the justice system at risk and allowing the PSNI to do their job, whilst asserting that the party was a family rather than about one person. She suggested that the party would unite and work together towards the upcoming general elections. These comments come amid a turbulent time for the DUP, which has been beset by various controversies in recent years.
The situation presents a difficult challenge for Robinson, who must navigate the party through a time of crisis, while also ensuring that it presents a united front in the coming elections. As of yet, it remains unclear how Sir Jeffrey’s resignation will impact the DUP and Northern Ireland’s political landscape. Nonetheless, Robinson will undoubtedly be hoping to win favour with voters and show strength in a time of uncertainty
