Larian Studios, the company responsible for the development of Baldur’s Gate 3, has stated that it will not be designing a highly requested sequel or expansion of the game. Speaking at this year’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Larian Studios CEO, Swen Vincke confirmed that his studio is not going to create another game in the Dungeons & Dragons series or its popular Baldur’s Gate franchise.
Vincke stated that Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a special place in the studio’s memory as it was such a success, but the team are ready to move on and start a new venture. Vincke has expressed disappointment to their fans, who will be sad to hear that their company will not be developing Baldur’s Gate 4 or an expansion, but this is not Larian’s style. He explains that they are a company of big ideas, and they prefer to focus on creating new games rather than adding DLCs or expansions.
Baldur’s Gate 3 sold over 10 million copies and won six categories in December’s Game Awards ceremony, making it a critical and commercial success. Nonetheless, Vincke clarified that the studio has large ambitions and having tasted success, Larian is aiming to create something novel and innovative rather than iterating on existing ideas.
It is uncertain what Larian Studios will develop next. In January, Vincke teased that the company’s next venture will not be what its fans assume, adding that he likes this project. Baldur’s Gate 3 was also recently confirmed to be the most popular game on Steam Deck in 2023
