Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 has started its crossover with 90’s sci-fi anime Cowboy Bebop on Wednesday, March 7. Dion Rogers, the art director of Overwatch, shared in an interview that their team are avid fans of the anime and it has inspired some of the game’s visuals during development. Cowboy Bebop’s aesthetics fit Overwatch’s east meets west art style, making the combination a great fit.

The reduced number of lines in Cowboy Bebop made it easier to combine the two art styles. To get this combination right, Blizzard worked closely with Cowboy Bebop’s animation studio Sunrise, alongside its owner Bandai Namco. Working together with a legendary IP and studio has been a dream come true for the Overwatch team.

Blizzard wanted the crossover to combine the extra detail and tech of Overwatch’s playable heroes with the iconic read of Cowboy Bebop characters. Rogers shared that their favourite part of the crossover is Wrecking Ball, an Overwatch hero transformed into an adorable corgi Ein, adding that “It’s one the coolest intros ever, and great to hear within Overwatch 2.”

This is the latest in a series of collaborations within Overwatch 2. Previously, Moira was transformed into fellow Blizzard villain Lilith with a new Diablo 4 skin, followed by a collaboration with K-pop girl group LE SSERAFIM
