Charli XCX has opened up about her upcoming album in an interview with NME. The pop star discussed Brat, which she described as “bitchy and gossipy and hardcore and very club feeling.” She added that “It’s definitely one for the girls who like to party and sweat and rave.” Charli also spoke about her relationship with the late singer, producer, and DJ SOPHIE. The two collaborated on many tracks, and Charli revealed that Brat features a song dedicated to SOPHIE, dealing with grief.

The interview took place at the BRIT Awards 2024, where Charli also served as a guest presenter. The event followed the announcement of her new album and the release of its first single, “Von Dutch” blessed with a club-ready sound. Charli said of the new album that it would see her return to “her roots” in club music.

The NME interview also touched on whether Charli’s fans were more intense than those of her fiancé, The 1975’s George Daniel. Charli jokingly stated that the super fans of both parties “really do have something quite intense about them” and added that “it would be a fight to the death to be honest, which I hope never happens…”.

Sophie died in 2021 at the age of 34. Her death was a tragedy that left Charli XCX and the music industry in mourning. Brat is the follow-up to Charli’s 2022 LP Crash. NME gave Crash a glowing four-star review, calling it “One emotion that her music will never evoke is boredom, and even when her sights are trained on infiltrating mainstream pop, she’s still an artist with a knack for surprising. If ‘Crash’ really does mark the death of Charli XCX as a major label artist – what a way to go.”

At the end of the interview, Charli XCX discussed her excitement about Brat, stating that “I feel good about the music. Every artist says this about their new record, but I really do feel like this is my best music [yet]. I’m super excited.”
