A young girl and her mother have been praised for rescuing hundreds of starfish that had been washed up on Cleethorpes beach after Storm Babet. Naturalist Chris Packham took to social media to commend three-year-old Jessie and her mother Heather for moving around 200 starfish into rock pools and deep puddles to save them. In the post, Packham dubbed Jessie the “Young Conservationist of the Year 2023”. Heather said she was extremely proud of her daughter’s efforts to save the stranded animals.
The pair had been walking along the beach when they noticed the starfish. Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue later confirmed that many of the creatures had already died but with the help of Jessie and her mother, they were able to move around 200 of them to safety. “We urge people not to take starfish home and do not disturb them in their rock pools or puddles,” the organisation posted.
Heather said Jessie told her friends at nursery about “her starfish rescue”. Responding to Packham’s post, Heather said Jessie “certainly does love life and she loves her animals very much”. Packham, who is well-known for presenting nature programmes, said that Jessie’s efforts were “brilliant”.
The incident highlights the importance of environmental awareness and responsibility, even in young children. It also serves as a reminder that small actions can make a big difference in helping to preserve our natural world
