Protests erupted outside of the BBC’s Belfast headquarters as demonstrators took to the streets to express their support for Palestine. The group, organised by Belfast Stands with Palestine, claimed that the BBC had shown bias against the country in its reporting of the conflict in the Middle East. The protest formed part of a series held across the UK, and saw large crowds gather in its support. There was a significant police presence as demonstrators marched to Broadcasting House from City Hall via Ormeau Avenue.
The organisers believe that the media is not presenting the facts of the situation in a fair and balanced way. They claim that Israel is responsible for the majority of the violence in the region and that the Palestinian people are being unfairly targeted. In response, a BBC spokesperson said that the corporation had provided coverage of the atrocities committed by Hamas, as well as the suffering in Gaza. They also stated that they have made it clear the devastating human cost of the conflict on both sides.
The international community has called for an end to the conflict and the immediate cessation of hostilities. Sinn Fein vice-president Michelle O’Neill attended a rally in Dungannon to express solidarity with the people of Palestine. She called on Israel to end its bombing and blockade of Gaza and to stop the occupation, illegal settlements, and apartheid. SDLP leader Colum Eastwood was among those who took part in Saturday’s Derry event, organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign branch.
The demonstrations were held in response to attacks launched by Hamas on Israel, which resulted in over 1,400 deaths and 203 people being taken hostage. In response, Israel has launched air strikes on Gaza, which Palestinian health officials say have killed more than 4,000 people. The international community has called for an end to the violence and a return to peace talks.
