The Youth Music Awards ceremony for this year was held on October 18, at London’s Troxy. There were twelve awards given out, with winners including musicians, creatives, organizers, and musical organizations. The categories included Live Performance Award, Young Leader Award, and Social Action Award. The judges, drawn from the music industry, including Hot Chip, Mixmag’s Deputy Editor, Joy Crookes, and Chicken Shop Date host Amelia Dimoldenberg, among others, selected the winners.
Various artists won the awards this year, including conscious rapper TL, who was presented with the Lyricist Award, and neo-jazz artist Ni Maxine, who won the Original Track Award (Solo). The other winners for this year included Owain Elidir Williams, who created the first and only bilingual music publication in Wales, as well as Elizabeth J. Birch, a singer-songwriter, and a role model for young disabled musicians.
The likes of Bicep, Clara Amfo, Kojey Radical, and MNEK presented the awards. The ceremony had show-stopping performances from Kennedy Taylor, ALT BLK ERA, Qazi & Qazi, Priya Ragu, EVA (who took home three awards on the night), Richard Carter, Kindelan, and Treeboy & Arc. Brighton-based musician, EVA, said that Youth Music “took me in when I was 18 and I didn’t have any music out. It’s all about supporting and showcasing undiscovered and emerging talent, which is just so important.”
Griffiths, CEO of Youth Music, said, “The Youth Music Awards provides a platform for the incredibly talented next generation of creatives and leaders emerging from the grassroots organizations we invest in across the country. The event really demonstrates the importance of supporting grassroots music.
