Luton Airport flights returning to normal after car park fire

Luton Airport has resumed normal service following a fire that “engulfed” a multi-storey car park on 15 August. While commercial airlines were back in business from mid-afternoon on Wednesday, there remains no indication as to when the shuttle service from Dart to the airport would restart. One car park close to the terminal has already reopened. “Significant structural damage” was caused by the blaze, according to Luton Airport, but nobody was seriously injured. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service believes the fire began as a result of a diesel “car fire” that spread to the building. An inquiry into the incident has begun.

Flying passengers were asked to arrive three hours early for their flights, and some found they had to wait as their departure schedules were adjusted, but for most visitors access to the airport was largely unaffected. However, one passenger spoke of being stuck in traffic for up to a quarter of an hour before parking her car, but admitted there was no disruption to her journey beyond having to walk more than five minutes from the mid-stay car park. Another couple from Bedford, missed their flight to Amsterdam and waited for “over 12 hours” before finally departing on the fourth rescheduled flight, 45 minutes behind schedule.

LutonAirport is the fifth-biggest airport in the UK, carrying more than 13 million passengers in 2022
