Alameda city officials have requested that the Portola Music Festival be discontinued due to significant noise complaints from locals. The festival, which took place from September 30 to October 1 at Pier 80 in San Francisco, was the second iteration of the event. Despite efforts to mitigate the sound, organisers were unable to prevent complaints.
The City of Alameda is asking that the San Francisco Entertainment Commission cancel the festival in 2024, or that Portola finds a new location that does not affect local residents. A Reddit thread has been created to try and save the festival from potential discontinuation. The thread urges attendees to email the Entertainment Commission directly and provide reasons for the event to continue.
Last year, the Alameda police suggested that event organisers work to “mitigate sound,” but admitted that “we still may hear bass from across the Bay”. This resulted in similar complaints to this year’s edition of the festival. Despite changes made by the operator to address noise concerns, the event was not able to continue given residents’ concerns.
