Met Police investigated by watchdog after man dies

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently conducting an investigation into the death of a man who fell and hit his head during a search undertaken by London’s Metropolitan Police. Omar Bachir, aged 45, was arrested outside the Stratford Magistrates’ Court after reports emerged that he was threatening security staff. Following his arrest, he fell and hit his head on a step outside the court building.

Bachir was taken into custody, where he was assessed by a medic and subsequently taken to the hospital. Whilst he was discharged back to the custody centre that evening, he became unconscious in his cell and was given CPR. He was then transported to the hospital via ambulance, but he tragically passed away on 1 August.

The IOPC is now investigating the contact between the police and Mr Bachir, including his arrest, officers’ actions at the custody centre, and the first aid that was provided. A post-mortem examination has already been conducted, but the watchdog organization has noted that further tests are still being carried out.

Charmaine Arbouin, IOPC regional director, shared in a statement: “Our thoughts are with Mr Bachir’s family. We have been in contact to explain our role and advise them of the next steps. We will continue to independently investigate Mr Bachir’s death as we work to establish the full circumstances and the actions of the Metropolitan Police staff involved.”

BBC Radio London is covering this incident and has reached out to the Metropolitan Police for a statement on the case. As of now, no response from the police department has been received
