The Barnsley Football Club has expressed gratitude towards the emergency services following a fire breakout on its team bus during the squad’s return home. The League One team was coming back from Devon, following a victorious 1-0 match against Exeter City when the fire began. It transpired near Gloucester on the northbound side, between junction 11 and 11a of the M5. The entire touring party, including coaches and players, were able to evacuate to safety before the situation completely spiralled out of control.
The team released a brief statement thanking the emergency services for their prompt response. The club reported that the bus had suddenly developed serious complications, which culminated in the fire outbreak. Everyone on board was safe, and their health was sound. The club further stated that they were not going to offer any comments on the incident for now, and their sole focus was ensuring that players and staff safely made their way back.
Emergency personnel had deployed and ensured that no one was trapped inside the burning vehicle. Additionally, they worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control quickly and prevent it from spreading as they ensured that the coaches and players safely evacuated before the fire spread. The motorway remained closed off in both directions between junctions 11 and 12 during this time, reopening in the early hours of Sunday morning following the successful resolution of the incident.
