St Machar Thistle, a newly formed football team comprised mainly of students, suffered a crushing defeat in a Scottish Amateur Cup tie over the weekend. The team faced AC Mill Inn Academy and lost 51-0, following a previous 19-0 loss the week prior.
St Machar Thistle began the game with only eight players due to family, work, and study commitments that limited the team’s options. They believed they had 10 players but were informed that two trialists were not eligible shortly before the match. Captain Eoin Devlin, typically an outfield player, made a “very brave” decision to play in goal for the team. By half-time, the score was 25-0 in favour of the opposing team.
Despite the massive loss, the St Machar Thistle team remains optimistic and determined to continue training and play in future games. Manager Cameron Ashwood is proud of the team’s resilience, and he believes the defeat can be a lesson for the players. While the team is still starting out and developing, the defeat will be a valuable experience for the players to learn from.
Ashwood has received mostly positive feedback and sees the team’s formation as an opportunity for students to get out of the house, play football, and interact with other people. St Machar Thistle is part of the Aberdeenshire Amateur Football Association Division 2 East and has been active for just two months. The team’s spirit and positive attitude reflect their motivation to learn and improve through their losses and victories
