Bernadette Horsey, a biomedical scientist, died seconds after giving birth to her son via planned Caesarean section at the Royal Derby Hospital on January 19, 2022. Her husband, Aaron Horsey, revealed that doctors had raised no concerns about her health before the delivery. Medical experts could not identify a clear cause of Horsey’s cardiac arrest and could find no evidence of amniotic fluid embolism, which the doctors carrying out the Caesarean predicted caused her death. The new mother reportedly expressed excitement moments before the incident.
Horsey opted to have her baby at the Royal Derby Hospital, partly because of her worries over maternity care services in Nottingham due to prior incidents in the area. Her cause of death remained “unascertained” following an autopsy. She had worked for Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust.
At the inquest, Dr. Rebecca Robinson, a consultant obstetrician who conducted the Caesarean, recalled that Horsey was initially “well” when Tim was delivered. Robinson said she heard Horsey say “I’m so excited” before her unexpected cardiac arrest. Professor Simon Kim Suvarna, a pathologist called after her death, told the court that he could not make a conclusive diagnosis as to why she died.
The inquest into Bernadette Horsey’s death was held at the Derby Coroner’s Court and concluded on Friday, February 11, 2022
