Shiney Row: Man dies in suspected American bully XL attack

Northumbria Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man passed away following an attack by a suspected American bully XL dog. The incident took place at Maple Terrace in Shiney Row, close to Houghton-le-Spring, at 7 p.m. BST on Tuesday. The police received a report that a dog had attacked a 54-year-old man.

A 44-year-old man initially arrested on charges of wounding with the intent has been re-arrested by the police on suspicion of murder. The suspect is in police custody. The dog behind the attack was destroyed at the scene, and a second dog was also seized. The police are of the belief that both dogs belonged to the bully XL breed.

Following the dog attack, residents reported that they saw paramedics tending to the man’s badly-injured throat. Det Ch Insp Angela Hudson, of Northumbria Police, revealed that those involved were “known to each other,” and there was no wider threat to the public. She expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and announced that the police would continue to offer support in any way possible.

The victim died following the attack, even though hospital medics attempted to save his life. Police have urged the public not to speculate on the incident on social media, and the investigation is ongoing
