The UK and Republic of Ireland will now be candidates to host Euro 2028 without competition after Turkey withdrew its joint bid with Italy for Euro 2032. Italy had only bid for the 2032 tournament whereas Turkey bid to host both Euro 2028 and Euro 2032. However, at a meeting of its executive committee on Tuesday, Uefa will still need to approve both bids officially.
Uefa has stated that “The presentations at that meeting will be an important part of the process which will take due consideration of the content of the bid submissions before reaching a decision”. Other than hosting the 2020 Euros, Italy had formerly hosted the event twice in 1968 and 1980, while Rome’s Stadio Olimpico was also used as a venue in the much-recently concluded event.
First-time host cities in the UK and the Republic of Ireland include Belfast’s Casement Park and Everton’s Bramley-Moore Dock, which are both proposed but are currently not in existence. The UK and Republic of Ireland’s bid which includes 10 stadiums was disclosed in April and comprises Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, and Wembley in London.
