A family from Kent is taking legal action against Network Rail after their son lost two toes on an escalator at London Bridge Station. The incident occurred on New Year’s Day, as the family, including four-year-old Oscar, were travelling home after attending the New Year’s Day Parade in London. Oscar’s parents said his wellington boot became trapped between the side of the escalator, resulting in the amputation of his little toe and partial removal of his fourth toe. Network Rail has denied liability, stating that the escalator was not faulty or unsafe.
A passing doctor helped treat Oscar at the scene, whilst an escalator engineer helped free him. He was taken to St Thomas’ Hospital for treatment. In the aftermath of the accident, Oscar’s parents described the incident as “terrifying” and “the worst day of [their] lives.” They are now seeking compensation from Network Rail.
Network Rail released a statement expressing their concern for the young boy and his family, adding that passenger safety is their “number one priority.” However, they declined to comment further whilst the case is ongoing.
Oscar’s father, Jason, stated his confidence that his son was not “doing anything he shouldn’t have been” on the escalator and emphasised the impact of the incident on his son’s life, causing him to be “completely terrified” of using any escalators or lifts
