Stephen Shrimpton, a school coach driver, has sadly died in a motorway crash. He was described by his family as a “loving husband and father”. The accident occurred on the M53 in Wirral, and Mr. Shrimpton was driving with Jessica Baker, a 15-year-old passenger, who also passed away. There were more than 50 students on the bus from West Kirby Grammar School and Calday Grange Grammar School at the time of the collision. The coach overturned, resulting in thirteen minor injuries and four others taken to hospital for treatment, with a 14-year-old admitted with life-changing injuries.
Mr. Shrimpton’s family said in a GoFundMe fundraiser for his funeral that he had experienced a medical emergency while driving. Additionally, the driver was a volunteer and later a full-time staff member at the Ellesmere Port food bank during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Port Grocery food bank. He helped to feed over 700 people at the time.
His family described Stephen Shrimpton as “a caring and thoughtful man who would always prioritise others over himself. Stephen will be sadly missed by all his friends and family. The family has requested privacy at this devastating time.”
Post-mortem examinations are due to be held next week to establish the cause of both deaths. Police have requested that people avoid posting information or images that could be distressing for the families and those involved. Specialised officers are supporting the families of Jessica and Stephen, as well as working with both schools and Wirral and Cheshire West Councils to provide the necessary trauma support for those affected by the incident.
Pupils, parents, and the general public are leaving heartfelt messages around a tribute tree set up at Jessica’s school. Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with footage to come forward and help with the investigation. The authorities urge that people refrain from speculating on the incident and causing distress for the families and individuals involved
