A charity tape series released by Never Sleep is honoring the late Shaun Roberts, former programmer of FABRICLIVE and promotions manager at fabric, who passed away last Christmas after complications from colon cancer. The tape includes a set by Critical Music’s Kasra with MCs GQ and Mantmast from Critical Music’s 15th birthday event in 2017. Roberts played a critical role in Kasra’s journey as a DJ by giving his label, Critical Music, a residency at FABRICLIVE. Beyond events, FABRICLIVE was an acclaimed compilation series, and Roberts worked on sets from Andy C & DJ Hype, Ben UFO, Kode9 & Burial, Oneman, and dBridge & Instra:mental.
Titled Kasra – Critical Sound live at fabric with MCs GQ and Mantmast, the tape is available for purchase with proceeds being donated to Bowel Cancer UK. Never Sleep requested Kasra contribute to their mix series, and the DJ knew he wanted to use the opportunity to pay tribute to Roberts and support cancer research.
Kasra noted on his Instagram, “Fabric played a huge role in shaping me as a music fan and years later became the London home for me and my label. This wouldn’t have happened without the help and support of Shaun Roberts”. FABRIC will be holding a fundraiser for Roberts in the coming weeks with The Chemical Brothers headlining the event.
Roberts worked on FABRICLIVE for 10 years, from 2006 to 2016, and helped make the series a definitive platform for dubstep, bass, UK techno, and jungle. He played an integral part in the fabric team and was an impactful figure for the drum ‘n’ bass community.
As a nod to Roberts’ importance to drum ‘n’ bass, Kasra chose to celebrate his legacy by dedicating his set with GQ and Mantmast to him. The tape offers fans a way to enjoy the sounds of the legendary FABRICLIVE series and to remember the important work that Roberts contributed to the music industry
