Police investigating the cutting-down of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland have arrested a second suspect. A man in his 60s was arrested on Friday evening and remains in custody assisting with inquiries. A 16-year-old boy was arrested previously on suspicion of criminal damage and has since been released on bail. The tree, which grew in a natural dip in the landscape near Hexham and featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, was cut down overnight on Wednesday.
Det Ch Insp Rebecca Fenney-Menzies stated that she hopes the second arrest demonstrates just how seriously the police are taking the situation. She added that the senseless destruction of what is undoubtedly a world-renowned landmark has inspired an outpouring of shock, horror, and anger throughout the North East and beyond. The tree was a local treasure and is considered part of England’s identity due to the inspiration it has provided to artists, writers, and photographers over the years. Northumberland National Park Authority officials have expressed their regrets over the tree’s demise, saying that it represented a deep connection and fond memories for many people.
The investigation is still in the early stages and police continue to encourage members of the public with information that could assist in the case to come forward. Det Ch Insp Fenney-Menzies stated that if anyone has seen or heard anything suspicious that may be helpful to the police, they should get in touch.
