A woman in Swindon suffering from long Covid has expressed her frustration at a lack of support for her condition. Ursula Wick continues to struggle with lethargy, pains, aches, and a loss of strength after being hospitalized with the virus in 2021. Although the NHS has long recognized the debilitating condition, many long Covid patients feel that they have been left to cope with minimal support.
Christine Bott, who works at Wiltshire’s long Covid rehab clinic, agrees, stating that there is a sense that patients are expected to “get on with it.” Nevertheless, the long Covid clinic sees many patients, demonstrating the ongoing need for support for those suffering from the condition. Long Covid can manifest itself as a variety of continuing symptoms such as persistent coughs, chest pains, and cognitive problems, often leaving patients unable to work or live as they once did.
For Ursula, the condition has been exacerbated by her other ongoing health concerns, including fibromyalgia. She notes that it is often difficult to tell where one condition ends and another begins. This complexity was reflected in her initial diagnosis, where she was discharged from hospital without receiving support or advice on her condition from medical professionals.
Ursula’s illness has inevitably affected her ability to work, with the Swindon business owner having to cut back on activity. While appreciative of the support she has received from her community, she notes that more needs to be done to help long Covid sufferers access the help and resources they need to manage their condition
