London Stansted Airport has announced plans to host a week-long charity drive-in cinema event in December. The films being shown include Christmas classics Elf and Home Alone, as well as Dirty Dancing, Grease and Top Gun: Maverick. The screenings will take place in the JetParks car park, which will be closed over the winter. The money raised by the event will be donated to Medcare, Magic Breakfast, and the Children’s Society.
Concerns have been raised that the event’s large LED screen could distract pilots, but an airport spokesman was keen to dispel these fears, stating that “The screen will be nowhere near the runway and certainly not on the flight path”. The spokesman also confirmed that authorities had cleared the charity event and that it was compliant with all relevant regulations.
Those worried about noise from planes impacting the experience have also been reassured, with the business operations manager stating that “all the sound will be within your car, so there shouldn’t be too much noise from planes. It shouldn’t affect the experience too much.” Two films per day will be shown as part of the event.
According to Alex Reed, the business operations manager at London Stansted, the idea for the event has been in development for some time. “We are always trying to think of new and creative ways of raising as much money as we can for charity and this is how the idea was born,” he said. The airport hopes to use the event to raise significant funds for important causes
