Marcel Dettmann set to perform at Sven Marquardt exhibition opening in Istanbul

Renowned photographer and bouncer of Berghain, Sven Marquardt, is set to launch an exhibition in Istanbul on November 9th named “NACHTBLENDE”. The exhibition is dedicated to displaying 25 years of Berlin club culture. Marquadt’s photos will showcase his friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and artists, with a few of them taken in East Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The exhibition will take place in Istanbul’s Goethe Institute and run until November 26th. The opening night will feature the collaborative audio-visual project “Slide.”

“Slide” is a combination of works from Marquadrt, lighting designer Lars Murasch, and Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann. The presentation is set to combine music, photography, and visual art and will provide an insight into the history of artist collaboration. This isn’t the first time Dettman and Marquardt have collaborated. They have worked on the audio-visual exhibition “Black Box” together. “Black Box” has been displayed worldwide, from Lagos, Nigeria, to Vancouver, Canada.

Marquardt is an East Berlin native and has been a pivotal figure in punk, new wave and arts emerging from Prenzlauer Berg since the mid-’80s. Following the fall of Berlin wall, he stopped his work and immersed himself in the city’s nightlife scene, returning ten years later. His dedication for the club culture took him to Berghain in 2004, where he has worked as a bouncer ever since. Besides his work at Berghain, Marquardt also teaches at the Ostkreuz School of Photography.

In a statement, Marquardt said that “Slide” is a blend of his two main passions, music, and pitch-black photography. He believes that this performance is a journey through the history of a relationship and artist collaboration.
