Former rugby player Kevin Sinfield has announced the 7 in 7 in 7 Challenge, an event where he will run an ultra-marathon every day for seven days in seven cities in December. The challenge is aimed at raising awareness and funds for those affected by motor neurone disease (MND), an issue close to Sinfield’s heart since ex-teammate Rob Burrow’s diagnosis in 2019. Sinfield has raised millions of pounds to support MND charities and has previously taken on endurance challenges to raise funds and awareness.
Each marathon will be full length with an additional mile added on to emphasise the importance of going the extra mile for friends in hard times. The challenge is set to raise money for five different charities, including the Royal Burrow Centre for MND in Leeds, and the Irish MND Association. Sinfield hopes to complete each day’s marathon in under four hours, explaining that it would be his toughest physical challenge to date. He hasn’t been able to train as much for this because of his commitments for the World Cup, so he and his team will be pushing themselves to the limit.
Tanya Curry, chief executive of the MND Association, praised Sinfield’s unwavering commitment to raising awareness and funds in the fight against MND. She noted that the previous fundraising efforts from his other challenges have enabled the MND Association to expand its services and invest in vital research into this devastating disease. The challenge will begin on December 1st, with Sinfield and his team travelling from Headingley Rugby Stadium in Leeds to York Minster. The challenge then takes him to six other cities around the UK and Ireland, with the final run from Twickenham Stadium to the Mall set for December 7th.
Sinfield expressed his excitement for the upcoming event and seeing the support from people on the streets once again. He is hoping to make the most of every step to support the MND community with the challenge and raise more awareness and funds for this important cause
