The Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards has taken place, celebrating women from film, music, and art for their contributions to society. Celebrities such as Olivia Colman, Kim Cattrall and Emilia Clarke were present to congratulate the winners. Jenna Ortega, who stars in the Netflix show Wednesday and the horror film Scream, won the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award. Meanwhile, the sportsperson award went to England’s Alessia Russo, who helped her team reach the 2019 Women’s World Cup final.

Janelle Monae, an eight-time Grammy-nominated singer, won the musician award. Monae, who identifies as non-binary, spoke of the importance of showcasing different voices in the room, explaining how honoured she felt to receive the award. Artist Marina Abramovic won the title of Artist of the Year, having been the first woman to have a major retrospective of her work at the Royal Academy this year.

Also honoured was Patsy Stevenson, who was named Campaigner of the Year. Stevenson was one of the women arrested during a recent Sarah Everard vigil. Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, received the Actress of the Year award. In her speech, Clarke highlighted how it felt to work in an industry where four out of five faces seen were men’s, commenting on the need for more inclusivity across the board.
