The man suspected of murdering acclaimed hip hop legend Tupac Shakur back in 1996 has pleaded not guilty in court, according to the BBC. Duane Keith ‘Keefe D’ Davis, a former gang leader from California, appeared at a Las Vegas court to enter the plea. Davis has been charged with murder using a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement. The arrest of Davis came 27 years after Shakur was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in the Nevada city. He died six days later in hospital on 13 September 1996.
Police claim that Davis planned the shooting of Tupac with his nephew after a fight broke out in a Las Vegas casino. Davis had received the gun used in the shooting from an “unnamed associate”. Davis has previously confessed to having been present in the car from which the shots were fired on 7 September. When police displayed hotel security footage from the day of the shooting at a news conference, it showed several men beating up a man now identified as Orlando Anderson, Davis’ late nephew who was killed in a shooting in 1998.
Las Vegas Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo described Davis as being the “on-the ground, on-site commander.” He added that “justice has been delayed, but justice won’t be denied.” Tupac’s murder case has remained unsolved for decades, with Mopreme Shakur, Tupac’s brother, recently claiming that the case had remained pending for so long because of Tupac’s race. The arrest of Davis has reignited interest in the case, and the trial is set to begin soon.
The case of Tupac Shakur’s murder has always been a topic of conversation for many. The world lost one of the greatest artists of all time in a very unfortunate way. Hip hop fans around the world can now rest easy knowing that someone is being held accountable for the murder of this legend. As the trial begins, all we can do is wait and see whether justice for Tupac Shakur will finally be served after all these years
