Humza Yousaf’s parents-in-law, Elizabeth El-Nakla and Maged El-Nakla, have been stranded in Gaza after the Hamas attacks that occurred a few weeks ago. The couple, who are from Dundee, Scotland, were visiting family when the borders closed due to the attacks on Israel. They have been trapped in the region ever since.

The Palestinian Border Authority has released a list of 92 British nationals, including El-Nakla and her husband, who can leave Gaza via the Rafah crossing into Egypt. The border crossing was opened by Egypt on Wednesday, and 335 foreign passport holders, as well as injured Palestinians, were the first to be allowed to cross.

Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s first minister, and his wife, Nadia El-Nakla, have expressed their fear for the stranded couple, who were without clean drinking water and had rapidly depleting supplies. Yousaf spoke with the BBC about his feelings of “helplessness and distress” over not being able to do more to bring his in-laws home. He also shared a video of his mother-in-law describing the conditions they were living under in Gaza.

Approximately 200 British nationals had been trapped in Gaza since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing over 1,400 people and taking at least 239 hostages. Israel has since launched thousands of air and artillery strikes on Gaza and has sent in ground forces. However, it is unclear how many people remain trapped in the region at this time
