Re:mise, a popular Berlin nightclub previously known as Fiese Remise, has announced its closure due to gentrification and lease extension issues. In an Instagram post made on November 1st, the venue revealed that its lease will expire in November 2023 and that despite efforts to extend it, no such opportunity has been offered by the landlord. This situation has forced the club to close down at the end of November. To celebrate their final week, Re:mise will be hosting several acts between the 13th and 20th of the month, including Lovefoxy, Aexhy, 131bpm b2b Camilla Rae, and Alexander Kowalski.
The announcement has sparked widespread reactions across the city, with many expressing sadness at the loss of yet another music venue. Over the past few years, Berlin has experienced a wave of gentrification, which has led to the closure of many art and music spaces. Many blame real estate speculation and rising costs of living for the situation.
The closure of Re:mise further highlights the ongoing challenges faced by independent venues. Earlier this year, a music venue in Leeds shut down due to similar issues, and many experts predict that we may soon see similar scenarios playing out across the globe. For musicians and clubgoers alike, this is a worrying trend that could greatly impact underground music scenes. We can only hope that initiatives to support venues and increase awareness around their value will be successful in stemming the tide of closures.
As Berlin continues to evolve, it is increasingly important to prioritize initiatives that preserve creative spaces and ensure that these venues can thrive. Local governments and communities must come together to provide financial support and legal protection to venues facing closures. Only through collaborative action can we hope to prevent further losses of cherished spaces like Re:mise
