New York-based producer and DJ Haram is set to release a four-track EP titled “Handplay” on December 1 under Hyperdub. The EP will feature two new dancefloor cuts reflecting upon the contradictions of feminine archetypes and offering a lyrical look at Haram as a lover, daughter, and comrade. The EP’s two other tracks are instrumental renditions of the original two tracks, titled “Handplay” and “No Funeral.”
Both tracks blend Middle Eastern musical stylings with club sounds, 909 synths, and DJ Haram’s distorted vocals. “Handplay” is a celebration and ode to sex workers and “No Funeral” offers a glimpse into toxic relationship cycles. Her last solo record “Grace” released in 2019 featured eight tracks and a remix from 700 Bliss and landed on Hyperdub.
The EP marks Haram’s only solo release this year. In 2023, Haram worked on several collaborations, including a remix for Fever Ray and production work on Armand Hammer’s latest album. Haram also continues her monthly club night, Monday Night Raw, at Brooklyn’s Lot Radio, showcasing live rap performances, and running open-format back-to-back shows.
In 2024, Haram releases her debut solo album. “Handplay” is the first single from her forthcoming EP on Hyperdub and is currently available for pre-order
