Counties Down, Armagh, and Antrim in Northern Ireland have experienced extensive flooding due to heavy rain overnight. The flooding has resulted in damage to businesses and shops in Newry city centre. Newry Canal, along with several roads in Killowen, Camlough, Moira, Ballynahinch, Bangor, and Helen’s Bay, burst its banks, leading to flooding in several areas in the city centre such as Sugar Island, Kildare Street, Canal Quay, and part of Bridge Street.
On Monday, the Met Office issued an Amber warning for rain which was the cause of the flooding. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) asked people to avoid the city centre. The N1 road linking Newry and Dublin was also closed in both directions at junction 20, near the Carrickdale Hotel.
Businesses on Merchant’s Quay, including BMC Accountants-owned Commercial House, were among the buildings that saw flood damages. Brian McCullagh, the firm’s owner, reported basement flooding up to waist-height. The building is in close proximity to Newry Canal, and McCullagh stated that businesses around the area no longer had flood insurance available.
