Adam Johnson: Police investigate death of ice hockey player

An investigation is underway following the death of Nottingham Panthers ice hockey player Adam Johnson during a match against the Sheffield Steelers. Johnson’s neck was cut by a skate during the game, and he was taken to hospital with serious injuries before being pronounced dead. South Yorkshire Police have said that officers were called to the scene and confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. Sheffield City Council’s health and safety team is assisting with the investigation.

Tributes have been pouring in for Johnson from across the world, including his home in Minnesota in the US and a number of his former clubs, such as the Pittsburgh Penguins in North America’s National Hockey League. Johnson’s former teams, University of Minnesota’s Duluth Bulldogs, Ontario Reign, Minnesota Wild, and Malmö Redhawks, have also paid tribute. Meanwhile, Johnson’s teammates and fans left flowers outside the arena.

On Sunday, Sheffield Wednesday’s players and staff paid tribute to Johnson ahead of their match at Hillsborough. Kevin Moore, assistant coach with the Panthers, has spoken to fans outside Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena where they play their home games, saying that “our group is strong, and they’re connected, and we’re going to do you guys proud.”

The University of Sheffield said that the death “shocked the community” and that they are supporting everyone affected by the incident. Sheffield Hallam University added that they are directly supporting those affected and making sure that anyone affected knows where they can get help
