Areas in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have been heavily affected by rainfall, leading to flooding and blockages in trains and roads. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for these areas, with up to 80mm of rain predicted. In addition, power cuts are expected as a result of the extreme weather.
Flood warnings have also been issued by the Environment Agency, including for Ryde and Newport in the Isle of Wight. Many roads are now impassable, and several drivers have been left stranded. All lines of the Island Line Railway between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin are now blocked, and trains are currently unable to run.
The weather warning has also been extended to other areas, including those in South Wales and South-west England. On Tuesday evening, the Met Office moved the warning area further south in the South East, excluding most of East Anglia. Storm Babet has caused at least seven deaths and has led to hundreds of evacuations and over 1,200 flooded properties in England.
Several areas have already broken their October rainfall records last week, while the Met Office predicts that up to 80mm of rain is yet to come. Those in affected areas are being warned to take precautions and to expect difficult driving conditions and disruption in public transport
