S4C chief content officer Llinos Griffin-Williams has been sacked following allegations of gross misconduct, with sources alleging that she had verbally assaulted former Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips, aired doubts about his Welsh-language skills, and threatened to end his career at a concert in France. Members of production company Whisper TV were also reportedly threatened by Griffin-Williams as to the amount of future S4C work they could expect. S4C has said it will not comment further on the matter.
Phillips, a first-language Welsh speaker who earned 94 caps for Wales, played for the Scarlets, Cardiff Blues, Ospreys, Bayonne, and Racing 92 in France. A mainstay of Warren Gatland’s Wales sides during Gatland’s first stint in charge, Phillips helped the team to win Grand Slams in 2008 and 2012, a Six Nations title in 2013, and a place in the semi finals of the 2011 World Cup. In addition to five caps for the British and Irish Lions, Phillips has dated singer Duffy and has starred in an S4C programme about his life in Dubai.
Newyddion S4C has previously covered bullying allegations at S4C. A report is set to be published after an investigation was launched in May. Following news of Griffin-Williams’s sacking, a former unnamed member of staff suggested that bullying allegations were “all too familiar” at the broadcaster, although no date has yet been set for the report’s publication
