Afghanistan inquiry hears senior officers hid SAS killings

An independent inquiry focusing on alleged war crimes committed by the UK special forces in Afghanistan has brought to light a hidden agenda of murder undertaken by the SAS, according to sources. The inquiry has placed senior Special Air Service (SAS) officers under scrutiny due to suspicions of the “deliberate policy” of murder by the SAS, with evidence hidden in some cases and others investigations being impeded by the UK’s Special Forces. Lawyers for the bereaved families said that internal emails showed “incredulity” at official reports of SAS night raids that ended in the deaths of Afghan civilians.

The families’ lawyer also stated that concerns about the wrongdoing of the SAS were accepted at the highest echelons of the UK Government. The probe was initiated following a BBC Panorama investigation that showcased how an SAS squadron killed 54 people in suspicious circumstances on one six-month tour in Afghanistan. The inquiry aims to understand whether UK special forces executed people during operations in Afghanistan between 2010 and 2013, besides examining the alleged cover-up of such illegal activity and inadequate investigations by the military police.

Lawyers of the bereaved families say that their submissions were based mostly on the military’s documentation, which was revealing and shocking. According to legal representatives, these documents showed that commanders in the special forces and military police investigations had extensive contemporaneous evidence of apparent attempts to cover up the misdeed. They also sought to ensure that suspected wrongdoing was not validated, did not recur, nor was investigated
