A girls under-14s football team based in Cardiff has received backing from rapper 50 Cent. AFC Rumney will now feature the US artist’s name and logo on their kit, alongside that of his hip hop group G-Unit. The sponsorship includes new club tracksuits and an away kit. The news was shared by coach Richie Brown on Facebook, adding that the team was “over the moon” to have the backing of the “world-known superstar”.
Brown said that he had promoted girls’ football for a decade and welcomed the involvement of 50 Cent. “Hopefully, the girls’ and women’s sections down in south Wales will get a little bit of spotlight and we can raise the profile,” he added. The team’s new strip is expected to be worn in their first game of the season, which will be away from home.
50 Cent is the latest celebrity to take an interest in British football. Rapper Jay-Z is reportedly weighing up an offer to take control of Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur. The club’s current owner, billionaire Joseph Lewis, has notched up a personal fortune of £3.7bn. In 2019, former footballer David Beckham launched his Miami-based team Inter Miami, while his wife, Victoria, has designed the team’s kit.
50 Cent is no stranger to sporting investment. He has a major stake in champagne producer Le Chemin du Roi, which is endorsed by Floyd Mayweather, the former boxing champion. He also invested in a company that markets headphones and speakers for fitness enthusiasts. The co-founders of the firm, Carmelo Anthony of the Portland Trail Blazers and former footballer Joe Montana, also own stakes in the business
