The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) is currently debating whether they should appeal the sentencing of Gavin Coyle, a man who was involved in a 2008 attack on an off-duty Catholic police officer. The attack took place at Spamount near Castlederg, and Coyle was sentenced to at least four years in jail last week, and will serve an additional two years on licence. The prosecution is considering whether to refer the sentence to a higher court.
Coyle was implicated in the attack after providing the vehicle used to transport the bomb. He has previously been convicted of weapons offences and admitted membership of the IRA. Last week, Belfast Crown Court told his victim, the off-duty policeman, that he had been left with “permanent disfiguring injuries”. The officer is said to be continuing to cope with both physical and mental health issues following the attack.
