After Palestinian militants targeted a concert in southern Israel, a surgeon from north-west London has reported that his son is “happy to be alive” after fleeing the scene. Elliot Sorene said that his son, Ariel, witnessed people being killed and kidnapped, but thankfully managed to escape physical injury. Ariel, who has dual Israeli- British citizenship, ran about 12 miles (20km) to find safety after being forced to leave the concert due to the attack. Sorene relayed that his son was not only happy to have escaped safely, but also felt upset about what he saw and for those who had been taken captive.
During the attack, terrorists with automatic weapons began to indiscriminately shoot the security guards and partygoers. While Ariel managed to run to his Renault Clio, the militants then began firing on his vehicle, causing him to escape through a field on foot with some of his friends. Unfortunately, one of his friends did not survive the attack and two others were injured.
As a result of the attack, dozens of people have been taken captive by the militant group Hamas, including foreign nationals. Among those believed to have been kidnapped is Noam Sagi’s mother, Ada Sagi, who is 74 years old. Mr Sagi, who is based in London, noted that it was upsetting to think such an event was even possible and expressed concerns about his mother’s well-being.
Dr Atef Alshaer, an academic at the University of Westminster and who grew up in Rafah in Gaza, expressed how apocalyptic the situation in Gaza had become, with the bombing campaign carried out by Israel’s armed forces claiming the lives of approximately 500 people. It was also reported that pro-Palestinian graffiti was daubed on bridges in Golders Green in London, with a kosher restaurant in the area also being targeted. Police are currently investigating the incidents as potential hate crimes
