Amy Dowden, the Strictly Come Dancing star, has made a surprise reappearance on the show since beginning cancer treatment. At 33 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in July, and has been chronicling her experiences on social media. After reading the show’s voting provisions, she provided an update on her chemotherapy treatment. “I’m doing really well, I’m over half way through treatment,” she stated. “I can’t wait to be back with you all permanently.”
Host Claudia Winkleman introduced her and said, “Now it’s time for the terms and conditions, and to read them is a very special member of our Strictly family. We have missed her so much and are delighted she is well enough to be back with us tonight.” Dowden was greeted with cheers and chants of “Amy” from her fellow cast members.
Dowden discovered the first lump in April, the day before she was scheduled to fly to the Maldives with her husband Ben for their honeymoon. After a mastectomy, it was discovered that the tumours had spread and another type of cancer was discovered. Following a previous chemotherapy cycle, she was hospitalised with sepsis. Last month, she posted an emotional video of herself with loved ones taking turns cutting locks of her hair.
She remarked that she felt “empowered and positive” after shaving her head, adding, “I wanted to share the truth and hopefully help others, and bring normality to a beautiful bald head.” In a post associated with the video, she added that shaving her head and “taking control” was the “hardest step so far.”
Strictly Come Dancing fans were delighted to see Dowden return to the stage and wished her a speedy recovery. Despite her medical concerns, she remained upbeat and motivated, even sharing her experiences with the public
