Two young boys have been hospitalized after being injured by an exploding firework in Caerphilly county on Sunday afternoon. The boys, aged eight and nine, suffered injuries believed to be connected to the fireworks explosion. According to a family member’s Facebook post, one of the boys needs an operation to reconstruct his hand.
The incident occurred on Hengoed Road, Hengoed, and the local authorities were quick to respond, with two road ambulances and an air ambulance being dispatched to the scene. The boys are currently under medical treatment at two different hospitals, with one patient being taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and the other to the Bristol Royal Hospital.
Supt Mike Richards of Gwent Police has called on members of the public to provide information relating to the incident. He said in a statement that “anyone with information is asked to call 101 or send us a direct message on social media, quoting log reference 2300332856.”
A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service has also confirmed that they were called shortly after 2 pm on Sunday. Alongside two ambulances, they deployed one duty operational manager, one Cymru high acuity response unit, and the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service.
