Man hid woman’s body in freezer for three years, jury told

A jury has been presented with disturbing details involving George Gordon, a 65-year-old man charged with the murder of his friend Delia McInerney. The case revolves around events in April 2023, just days before Delia was set to relocate to Portugal for a fresh start. Prosecutors revealed that following her death, Gordon concealed her dismembered body in a freezer at his St Helens flat for almost three years while fraudulently accessing her finances through credit cards and loans.

Delia, aged 62, was found deceased alongside her five guinea pigs, who were also discovered dead in the freezer. The trial at Liverpool Crown Court began without Gordon appearing in the dock. Although he has pleaded guilty to killing Delia, he disputes the murder charge by claiming self-defence. The pair had known each other for many years, and Delia lived with Gordon in his flat on Gerards Court whenever she was not traveling or at her home in Anfield, Liverpool.

According to prosecutor Martin Reid KC, police discovered Delia’s remains in a chest freezer on January 8. Friends had not seen her for some time, during which Gordon deceived them by impersonating Delia in communications over email and phone. Reid outlined the prosecution’s position that Gordon was responsible for her death in April 2023 and that he then obtained thousands of pounds from her bank accounts while keeping her body hidden. Gordon initially told the police that he had struck her with a hammer to end her suffering after an overdose but now insists his actions were in self-defence.

Further evidence disclosed that in the weeks leading up to Delia’s planned move, Gordon acquired items such as a sledgehammer and handsaw, which the prosecution says were used to kill and dismember her. On April 11, he recorded a video of Delia with her pet guinea pigs, which proved to be the last footage of her alive. The dead guinea pigs were determined to have drowned. Additionally, after Delia’s death, Gordon withdrew funds from her accounts and even purchased a chest freezer to store her remains. He traveled to Portugal later that month, posing as Delia in communications with her acquaintances. The unraveling of Gordon’s deception began in December 2025 when someone claiming to be a social worker requested a transfer of Delia’s disability benefits, resulting in his arrest in January 2026. Gordon denies all charges of murder and animal cruelty; the trial is ongoing and expected to last six weeks
